It seems that during fall/winter my car's exhaust seems to either carry more, or be louder somehow. In the summer, it doesn't seem that loud; but in the winter, it seems really loud. I've noticed this both in traffic and alone on backroads in the sticks, so it's not just a lack of or presence of ambient noise. I notice it with the top/windows up or down.

Thoughts?

FYI I am completely sober, this is just something I've thought about here and there. Have a Lancia for your time.

Air is denser when it's cold, allowing sound to travel easier.

The metal is more contracted when it's cold, but that's only until it warms up. Another reason is that sound travels better through denser objects and cold air is denser than warm air.

Could it be that the cold air makes your engine run differently? Or since the cold metal exaust tubing is stiffer it resonates more? I dunno... I'm a little buzzed at the moment

I figured that the denser air would have an effect. Also the fact that 99% of the trees around here are bare probably helps for it to echo more I guess.

Early Miatas run real rich, so colder denser air could potentially create more power and subsequently be louder.

My turbo Forester loves cool weather. Really really lives ice cold weather.

Bit i think your answer is that cool site is dense and transmits sound better than warm air.

Besides cold air being better at transmitting sound, materials vibration damping properties change with temperature. Generally as temperatures decrease a materials ability to dampen vibrations decreases. Since sound is just vibration that means your car won't dampen the sound vibrations as much and it will be louder in the winter.
